2.8L DURAMAX LWN COLORADO & CANYON 4 CYLINDER DIESEL A 4 cylinder diesel option was added to the 2016 model year GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickups. This addition made the Canyon and Colorado the first and, for the time being, the only diesel option available in its segment. The Canyon/Colorado primarily competes against Nissan's Frontier and Toyota's Tacoma pickup models, while Ford and Dodge continue to abstain from the mid-size market. The inline 4 cylinder 2.8L Duramax LWN produces 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. For the 2017 model year, General Motors made the 2.8L Duramax optional in GMC Savana and Chevrolet Express 2500/3500 vans. Originally rated up to 31 highway mpg, the Duramax was downgraded to an EPA rated maximum 30 mpg for the 2017 model year. 10521 4.5L Duramax LMK 6.6L Duramax L5P Specs 2.8L I-4 DURAMAX, CLASS EXCLUSIVE DIESEL OPTION General Motors unveiling of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado came with an interesting twist - the mid-size pickup and its GMC twin, the Canyon, would receive a diesel engine option for the 2016 model year (availability began in the Fall of 2015). The 2.8L Duramax is an important part of GM's International portfolio, where it is offered in a number of applications in a magnitude of countries; it just took a while to reach the United States. The 2.8L also has a sister engine, measuring 2.5 liters and based on the same basic platform as the 2.8L. As you're probably already aware of, GM had planned to offer a diesel in their half ton Sierra and Silverado models (4.5L Duramax), but the entire project was scrapped when the U.S. economy took a turn for worse and a struggling General Motors required a significant bailout from the U.S. government. The 2.8L Duramax is an inline 4 cylinder, variable geometry turbocharged diesel featuring a high pressure common rail injection system and dual overhead camshaft design. The unit produces 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, which helps substantiate the fact that the Colorado and Canyon are rated to tow over 7,500 lbs when properly equipped. At only 170 cubic inches, the Duramax powered Colorado and Canyon feature best in class fuel economy by a wide margin to their closest competitor. Power is transmitted to the wheels by General Motors' 6L50 "Hydra-Matic" six speed automatic transmission; a 3.42:1 axle ratio is the only offered. An integrated electronic brake controller, VGT exhaust brake feature, and automatic rear locking differential are standard issue on all diesel equipped Colorado/Canyon pickups. 2.8L DURAMAX SPECS Engine: 2.8L Duramax Inline 4 Cylinder Turbodiesel Assembly Plant: Rayong, Thailand Displacement: 2.8 liters, 170 cubic inches Engine Block Material: Grey cast iron Cylinder Head Material: Cast aluminum alloy Rotating Assembly: Forged steel crankshaft, forged steel connecting rods, aluminum pistons, powdered metal camshaft with sintered cam lobes Firing Order: 1 - 3 - 2 - 4 Compression Ratio: 16.5 : 1 Bore: 3.70 in (94 mm) Stroke: 3.94 in (100 mm) Turbocharger: Water cooled variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), intercooled Injection: Direct injection, 2000 bar high pressure common rail (29,000 psi) Valvetrain: DOHC (dual overhead camshaft), 16 valve (4 valves per cylinder) Peak Horsepower: 181 hp @ 3,400 rpm Peak Torque: 369 lb-ft @ 2,000 rpm Max Engine Speed: 5,000 rpm Fuel Type: ULSD, B20 biodiesel compatible Fuel Economy: 4x2 Colorado/Canyon EPA rated 22 city, 30 hwy mpg 4x4 Colorado/Canyon EPA rated 20 city, 28 hwy mpg Engine Weight: ~ 520 lbs Engine Dimensions: Length: 25.4 in (645 mm) Width: 25.8 in (655 mm) Height: 34.1 in (865 mm) 2.8L DURAMAX HORSEPOWER, TORQUE CURVE 2.8L Duramax horsepower and torque curve Torque curve credits: General Motors Powertrain Division, www.gmpowertrain.com
